In 1910, C.S. Steen had a problem. He was going to lose his sugar crop because he couldn't get it from his farm in Abbeville, Louisiana to the sugar mill fast enough. So he erected his own mill.

Steen's Pecan Pie
 
* 1/4 cup butter or margarine
* 1 tbsp. all-purpose flour
* 1 tbsp. cornstarch
* 1 1/2 cups Steen's Syrup
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1/4 tsp. salt
* 1 cup pecans 2 eggs
* 1 tsp. vanilla
 
An pastry for 1 medium sized Pecan Pie. Melt the butter, then add flour and cornstarch and stir until creamy smooth. Add Steens's Syrup & sugar and boil for 3 minutes. Let cool. Add beaten eggs, nuts and vanilla, the blend well. Pour mixture into pan lined with unbaked pastry. Bake in hot oven of 450 F for 10 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350F and bake about 30 to 35 minutes. Let it cool, then enjoy!		 Today Steen's syrup is sold widely throughout Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. It is still grown and processed in Abbeville. Steen's molasses is used in a variety of oatmeal cookies and in K.C. Masterpiece Barbecue Sauce.
