Frequently
Asked
Questions
and Answers
1) How much coffee and
water should I use in my Toddy ?
Pour
1 dry pound of your favorite canned, bagged, or gourmet REGULAR GRIND
coffee into the white plastic brewing container. Pour 4 cups of cold water
slowly over your coffee grinds. Allow to stand for 5 minutes, then add
5 more cups of cold water. PLEASE DO NOT STIR the mixture.
If
you're using a 1/2 pound of coffee, add 2 cups of cold water and let stand
for 5 minutes then add another 2-1/2 cups of cold water and let the mixture
steep for 10-12 hours.
When
brewing is complete, lift the plastic brewing container over the glass
decanter. Remove the rubber plug with great caution. Coffee concentrate
will immediately begin to flow into the decanter. Set the white plastic
brewing basket on top of the decanter and let the concentrate filter into
the decanter. Drain time takes approximately 15-30 minutes. Produces about
6 cups of concentrate.
2) How much Acids, and
Caffeine does using the Toddy reduce?
Hot
brewed coffee has 3 to 4 times more acid than the same coffee brewed in
a Toddy. Brewing with the Toddy also produces a cup of coffee that has
approximately 2/3 the caffeine of hot brewed coffee.
3) How do I make a Tea
Concentrate in my Toddy?
Add
½ pound of your favorite tea leaves in your brewing container. Fill
with cold water 1" from the top of the brewing container. Let set for 12
hours and then drain. Store concentrate in the refrigerator. To make a
glass of iced tea, add 2 ounces of tea concentrate to 14 ounces of water.
Adjust the strength to fit your taste.
4) What ground coffee
do I use in my Toddy?
Course
to medium ground coffee is essential to achieve maximum filtration. Perk
is ideal where drip is typically to fine. Fine ground coffee has a larger
percent of coffee dust, which will clog your filter. Make sure when you
add the water you do not stir with a spoon. Just slowly add the water.
5) How do I brew ½
lb of coffee?
When
brewing a half-pound of coffee, first add 1 cup of water in the bottom
of the brewing container. Then add ½ pound of medium to course ground
coffee. Slowly pour 2 ½ cups of water over the grounds. Finally,
wait 5 minutes and slowly add 1 ½ cups of water. Do not stir and
allow sitting for 12 hours before draining.
6) How long do I brew
my concentrate?
We
have found that brewing for 12 hours will give you maximum strength, while
producing a less acid cup of coffee. Cold brewing for 12 hours will produce
a cup of coffee that has 2/3 less acid than a hot brewed cup of coffee.
If you brew longer it will produce a stronger concentrate, but it will
also increase the acidity.
7) How long will my concentrates
last in the refrigerator?
From
day one to day 10 you will not notice a difference in the quality of the
cup of coffee. After 10 days, the concentrate begins to deteriorate producing
a cup of coffee that slightly stale tasting. If you do not find the taste
objectionable, you can keep the concentrate in your refrigerator for 3
weeks. Discard the concentrate after 3 weeks. If you do not drink a pound
of coffee in 10 days, you can freeze half of your concentrate and defrost
it when you need it. Frozen concentrate will remain fresh tasting for 6
months.
8) Why is my concentrate not draining
and my filter clogging?
It
is very important when adding water to the coffee grounds to be careful
not to stir. When you stir the brew it will disturb the filter bed and
the fine sediment will go down and clog the filter. Using a course to medium
ground coffee is essential to produce a filter bed that keeps the sediment
from falling down and clogging the filter. If you have to use a finer ground
coffee, add 2 cups of water in the bottom of the brewing container before
you add the coffee. After adding the ground coffee, slowly pour in 5 cups
of water. Wait 5 minutes and add the remainder 2 cups of water. Do not
stir the mixture and allow it to sit overnight. In the event that the concentrate
does not drain entirely out, take a long teaspoon and stick it through
the wet grounds and slightly scrap the top of the filter. This should allow
you to recover some of the trapped concentrate. Worst case, pour remaining
wet grounds through a strainer into another container and rinse your filter.
Place the rinsed filter back into the brewing container and add the strained
concentrate back into the brewing container.
9) Why is my brewing container
leaking?
Examine
the outside of the hole in the brewing container (where the cork is inserted).
When a knife is used to push out the filter it will damage the brewing
container. This will cause a small slice on the side of the hole, which
will allow the concentrate to leak past the cork. When pushing out the
filter use something round like a straw or an ice pick. If the hole is
slightly cut, you can drill a hole slightly bigger than the manufacture
hole.
10) How long can I use
my Toddy filter?
After
brewing your coffee, rinse out your filter with water (no soap). Immediately,
place your filter in the refrigerator in a zip lock bag or plastic container.
You can use your filter up to 10 times, but discard it after 3 months. |
